Title

Bender Library, American University

Subject

The American University Centennial (1893-1993)

Description

"The building we dedicate here today closes the quad...even while that closure opens a
new future to us all. It is a marvelous paradox that this building opens the future by
bringing us the gifts of the past."

(University President Joseph J. Sisco, at the dedication ceremony, April 21, 1979)

Originally housed in Hurst Hall, then in the Battelle Memorial
Building, University Library collections moved into the Jack I. and
Dorothy G. Bender Library and Learning Resources Center in
January 1979. Ground was broken for the four-story structure
on May 14, 1977. Funding for the building came from the Bender and Kresge
Foundations and numerous trustees, faculty, students, alumni, staff,
and friends of the university.
